Unless you’re new to reading this blog, you know I have had a relationship with SPG in the past, and this post about Kauai is part of an on-going project to promote The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express.
Danté and I were recently challenged to book a trip with 70K Starpoints somewhere in the USA, during the peak holiday travel season, either around Thanksgiving or Christmas. And we immediately both wanted to visit Hawaii, just before Thanksgiving. I had been before but only to the Big Island, so when we started to think about which island to visit, we chose Kauai as an island that would be new to both of us. From the photos online only, we thought the Sheraton Kauai was our best bet for a great beach, good food and the kind of service you can expect being a loyal Starwood Member…
Here are some photos from the Sheraton Kauai which DOES indeed have a great beach!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t over the moon after our stay. There was nothing HORRIBLE about it, but we had some problems at check in (which were resolved in the end), the room wasn’t what I expected from my past stays at SPG properties, and neither was the pool or private cabana experience as nice as we’d hoped. We did love the dinner we had at Rum Fire, unfortunately, I was so jetlagged I forgot my camera and have no photos of it. But I would recommend dining at Rum Fire or having cocktails at their bar even if you’re not a guest.
Those small issues aside, it was fabulous to learn how easy it is to visit places we want to go on Starpoints only. My experience with other awards programs can be that it’s not always easy to redeem points. Not so with The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express and our Starpoints.
Since we didn’t even come close to using them all, we plan to use the leftover Starpoints in 2016 on our next Starwood hotel stay with our SPG Amex. This time we will head to Spain. We’re both huge fans of the work of Frank Gehry so cannot wait to see what Hotel Marqués de Riscal is really like and if it lives up to the hype that’s already started in our imaginations! And if for some reason that doesn’t work out, we plan to use the leftover Starpoints for a flight on one of the 30 SPG airline partners to somewhere else we’re dreaming of visiting. The list is getting longer every year!
Here are some photos from our exploration of greater Kauai. The South Shore is a nice place to stay and that part is an experience I would most definitely repeat. Though wait till you see what the North Shore is like in my next post, or in this post that Dante has already published!
How would you use 70K Starpoints during the holidays?
I have worked for SPG on a one-off project basis and I now have a relationship with SPG Amex. I receive financial compensation for my services and SPG Amex sponsored my trip to Kaua’i with Danté by providing complimentary airfare to and from Hawaii plus enough Starpoints to pay for our two nights at the Sheraton. We paid for everything else with our SPG Amex card. I wrote this post and all opinions are my own.
